Will regulate tuition classes – Education ministry secretary

Secretary to the Ministry of Education – Prof. Kapila C. Wijewardena had stated that attention is given to regulating private tuition classes over continuous complaints made to the ministry.

Although the Ministry of Education does not have the direct authority to regulate private tuition classes, it is legally responsible for all the educational activities of students and said that such activities have to be addressed, Prof. Wijewardena pointed out.

The Secretary added that such measures have to be taken especially due to the unfair fees charged for ‘online classes’ and children who are unable to make payments on time not being allowed to join the sessions.

At present there are only 50,000 registered private tution classes in Sri Lanka and over 300,000 private tution teachers, reports say.
